How to Turn a Photo into Paint by Numbers for Free
This guide walks you through the entire process of converting any photo into a paint-by-numbers canvas using Paint Craft — from choosing the right photo to printing and painting your finished design.
Easy online painting is free without signup. Each Easy export is purchased separately. Each Masterpiece package needs an account and a one-time payment per canvas.
What You Need
- • A device with a web browser (computer, tablet, or phone)
- • A photo in JPG, PNG, or WebP format
- • For printing: a printer and paper (regular, card stock, or canvas paper)
- • For painting at home: paints, crayons, coloured pencils, or markers
Step 1: Choose the Right Photo
The quality of your paint-by-numbers result depends heavily on the photo you choose. Here is what works best:
✓ Good photos
- Clear, well-lit subject
- Strong contrast between subject and background
- Simple composition with one main focus
- Moderate colour variety
- Pets, portraits, flowers, landscapes, buildings
✗ Avoid
- Very busy backgrounds (dense foliage, crowds)
- Low resolution or blurry images
- Very dark or low-contrast photos
- Extreme close-ups with no clear shape
- Photos with heavy text or watermarks
Step 2: Upload Your Photo
- 1. Go to the Create page.
- 2. Click the upload area or drag and drop your photo. Paint Craft accepts JPG, JPEG, PNG, and WebP formats.
- 3. Choose an aspect ratio if you want to crop: Original, Square, 4:5, 3:4, or 16:9.
Step 3: Choose Your Settings
Select a difficulty level based on who will be painting and how much detail you want:
| Level | Colours | Best for |
|---|---|---|
| Easy · free | 10–50 | Children, first-time painters, simple designs |
| Masterpiece · paid | Up to 255 | Pro artists; automatic digital artwork and email delivery |
Tip: Start with Easy for free. Masterpiece is a one-time digital purchase per canvas at your local checkout price. Printing and supplies are separate.
Step 4: Generate Your Canvas
For Easy, click Generate Easy canvas to open the painting studio. For Masterpiece, sign in and prepare the package on our servers, then review the price and pay once. After payment, email links deliver the numbered canvas PDF, finished artwork PNG (4,000px longest edge) and paint-colour list PDF. You can also download them from My Masterpieces.
Step 5: Paint Online or Export
You have two options:
🎨 Paint Online
Click Start Painting to open the interactive studio. Tap regions to fill them with colour. Paint with a smooth digital brush, use undo/redo, zoom and pan, and get hints when stuck.
🖨️ Print at Home
Purchase your canvas export as a PDF (numbered outline + colour guide), SVG (scalable vector), or PNG (high-resolution image). Print on paper, card stock, or canvas paper and paint with real art supplies.
Tips for the Best Results
- • For kids: Use Easy mode at 10–15 colours with large, clear photos like cartoon characters, animals, or simple objects.
- • For printing: Use the PDF export at 100% scale. Thick paper (200gsm+) or canvas paper works best for wet media like watercolour or acrylic paint.
- • For gifts: Try converting a family photo or pet portrait in Easy mode, then printing on canvas paper and framing the result.
- • For art therapy: The repetitive focus of paint-by-numbers is calming and meditative. Use moderate difficulty (20–30 colours) for a 1–2 hour session.
- • Colour matching: Use the colour guide included in the PDF export. The hex values can be used to find matching acrylic paints at art supply stores.
Troubleshooting
Canvas has too many tiny regions
Lower the colour count or switch to a simpler difficulty level. The cleanup step merges very small regions, but extremely detailed photos will always produce more regions.
Photo upload does not work
Check that your file is a JPG, PNG, or WebP image. Try a different browser. Very large images (over 20 megapixels) may take longer to process.
Colours do not match the original photo
Paint-by-numbers reduces the full colour range to a limited palette. This is by design — the result will look like the original when painted, but individual colours are approximations. Higher colour counts produce closer matches.
